Goddess Wheel (Lysitrata) Galt MacDermot [HAIR] CD
Composer: Galt MacDermot
Lyricist: Matty Selman
A GREAT new score done very much in the style of TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA! Galt's still got it!!
Galt MacDermot, who penned the music for Broadway's 'HAIR' and 'Two Gentlemen of Verona,' has collaborated with book and lyric writer Matty Selman on their new musical, Goddess Wheel.
Goddess Wheel, according to press notes, "is a new musical loosely based on Aristophanes' 2,400 year old anti-war play, Lysistrata."
The first presentations of the musical starred Tony Award winner Cherry Jones at Harvardís American Repertory Theatre and the Prince Theatre in Philadelphia. In 2005, Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21) further developed the musical and presented it from November 30 - December 10.
The musical premiered as part of the 2011-2012 season at Wagner College Theatre. The show's premiere run is joined by Galt's own band, The New Pulse Jazz Band featured on this CD.
Back in 2002 Robert Brustein, then artistic director of A.R.T. in Cambridge was eager to present a musical adaptation of "Lysistrata" by Larry Gelbart. Playbill-on-Line mentions an Alan Menken-David Zippel version which was abandoned. Galt MacDermott and Matty Selman wrote a version which was produced starring Cherry Jones, evidently to not very good reviews.
MacDermott and Selman have evidently continued to work on this piece on their own terms. The CD liner notes mention a concert version at Carnegie Hall in 2002, another at CAP21 in 2005. A full stage production "world premiere" took place at Wagner College, Staten Island in 2012. The soloists on this studio cast album includes Broadway names Larry Marshall and Luther Creek, also Suzanne Griffin, Catrice Joseph, Melanie May Po, Chris Montelone.
