Product Description
May 9, 1971: the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the third anniversary of the Broadway musical Hair in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York City.

Quite an experience it is to listen to this live recording of a singular mass celebrated on may 9, 1971, on the ocassion of the third anniversary of the Broadway musical HAIR in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, in New York City. The C.D. is 47 minutes long and it mixes the most famous musical pieces from the play sung by its original cast, some additional choir arrangements for the mass and some pieces of the mass itself with the words of the priests, such as the welcome, the lesson, the epistle and the gospel. Out of the 19 tracks, six correspond to the songs known in the Broadway musical: Aquarious (Track 3), What a Piece of Work is Man (7), Hair (9), Three-Five- Zero- Zero (10, as the offertory), Where Do I Go? (11) and Let the Sunshine In, which closes the recording under the name of The Flesh Failures. There's one more theme - 100 Year Old Man - which you may find in the DESINHAIRITED album; this theme might have been a song included in the original off-Broadway production but I don't recall it in the Broadway show and is not included in the Broadway album. About five tracks deal with the priests'speeches (pieces of the mass itself) and 4 tracks (beautiful recordings indeed) correspond to the so-called "Mass in F" sung by the Choirs of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the Choirs of St. Martin's Parish & St. Mary's Parish. Obviously enough, the recording is not perfect since it's live and you can listen to some coughing and noises (specially in the first track). However, this does not abate the wonderful (and powerful) appeal of this recording which sounds as "primitive" and spontaneous as the play was meant to be. An additional factor is the booklet which includes a detailed description of the mass and some (small) photographs of it; the beauty of the cover speaks by itself. As a devout admirer of the musical play which I saw twice back in 1971 in both the Broadway and London production, I would highly recommend it to all the "Hair tribe" who has ever seen the play or loved its music. It is quite an unusual and refreshing experience, full of originality, vitality and freedom of spirit, quite necessary in these days.
