Version: BROADWAY 1958

SAY, DARLING opened on Broadway in 1958 and became an instant success for its collaborators, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, Jule Styne, and Abe Burrows.
It starred David Wayne, Vivian Blaine and Johnny Desmond and it was based on Richard Bissell book. Bissell, known for his book "71/2" which was used for The Pajama Game, decided to write a book about the writers who might have written the show about the show. What resulted proved to be a hilarious, unforgettable musical comedy. It never meant to be a conventional musical despite all the trappings-a brassy leading lady, a megalomaniac composer, a saturnine director, a sophomoric producer, a growling press agent, but all of this made great theatre.
